On my kitchen countertop, I have a white frame with two recipe cards side by side. One side is my Grandma Jorgenson’s chicken scratch penmanship that I can barely read, with careful instructions for her chili recipe. On the other side, my Grandma Parker’s recipe for peach cobbler is written in her elegant cursive. These recipes are two of my absolute favorite things I own.
Two Great Recipes from Two Great Women
Grandma Jorgensen never missed any of the events in my life. For example, she was always there to cheer me on at track meets, birthday parties, graduations, and all the other special moments. She was also the first one to the hospital to snuggle my babies. When it gets cold in the fall and I start missing her, I like to make her chili, sit around the table with my own children, sip that warmth, and think of her.
My Grandma Parker always made sure to create special memories for me. She’d come take me on date nights where we’d go on all kinds of adventures. Some of my favorites were attending plays at the SCERA Theatre, watching ice skaters twirl in the cold, and going to see The Princess Bride on the big screen for the first time. Her recipe is the one I pull out for Sunday parties when I need a killer dessert that will impress everyone. It’s the perfect warm hug of sweetness anytime, but it’s best in the summer with homemade ice cream.
These two recipes have a permanent place on my counter because they remind me of two women who have a permanent place in my heart. In the quiet moments at the end of the day, when I’m wiping off counters and tidying up the kitchen, their handwritten recipes are one of the last things I see, and I think of how much I miss them, but mostly about how loved they made me feel.
