A family member of mine (we’ll call her X) would always ask people for their best recipes at family gatherings. We were willing to share because hey, what are families for, right? That is, until we found out that she was making money off our recipes.
One day we were perusing X’s social blog when we stumbled upon a lot of recipes that seemed awfully familiar. Come to find out, X was touting the recipes we had shared with her as her “personal famous family recipes” and monetizing them. When we confronted X, there was no apology, simply a justification that this is how money is made, and we should have known that this is where it would end up.
Lesson learned.
After that, when X continued to ask for recipes for any new dish, we all continued to share. What we don’t tell her is that now, we “forget” to include all the ingredients.
This root beer recipe is one that I was happy to share with X, but I may have failed to mention that you need to use Gygi brand extract. If you use McCormick or Watkins, it ends up with a bitter aftertaste.

HOMEMADE ROOT BEER
Makes about 53 (12 oz) servings
Ingredients
- 4 gallons water
- 5 lbs sugar
- 4 lbs dry ice
- 4 oz Gygi root beer extract
Directions
- In a large pot, stir together the water, sugar, and extract. Keep stirring until the sugar dissolves.
- Add the dry ice, being careful not to touch it! Dry ice is cold, people.
- Stir for 10-15 minutes so the dry ice won’t stick to the sides or bottom of the pot.
- Once the dry ice is mostly melted, serve. Be careful to avoid serving any pieces of unmelted dry ice.
That’s the full and complete recipe. I promise!
